Following the May 2008 Sichuan earthquake, Ai Weiwei launched a 'citizen investigation' into the school collapses and began to compile a database of the children who were killed. Volunteers relaying information from the earthquake zone covered a total of 154 schools in numerous towns and counties. By September 2009, the names, ages, school names and other details of 4851 dead students had been verified — a list of their names is featured in this video.
