Set of DVDs featuring three lectures given by Philip Tinari at China Institute, New York in January 2007.

Disc 1: A Very Brief History of Contemporary Chinese Art (1:14:34)
This session traces the basic movements and schools that have shaped art in China since its emergence in the 1980s, with attention to the internal dynamics, interpersonal relationships, and historical circumstances that have factored in its development.

Disc 2: Four Artists (1:19:25)
This session examines the work of four artists. Xu Bing, Yang Jiecang, Qiu Zhijie, and Hong Hao come from different backgrounds, work in different media, and have traveled different paths, all of which speak to distinct and important eras and currents in recent Chinese art history. Includes a discussion with Qiu Zhijie.

Disc 3: Sensation and Legitimization (1:14:00)
This session explores the institutional and systemic transition that occurred in China at the turn of the 21st century, as contemporary art emerged from the underground state of the 1980s and 1990s into a prominent component of the PRC's emphasis on "creative industry." It will trace this history through a detailed look at several of the most important exhibitions in the period 1998–2005.
