Photologue | Perennial From the Not-So-Far South

In its sixth edition, the Asia-Pacific Triennial (APT) presented by the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art continues to be a major endeavour to develop and investigate contemporary art practices in Asia and the Pacific. The Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale is another perennial with a similar mission but has a different approach; Fukuoka takes on an on-going survey of Asian art by showcasing works from the same twenty one Asian countries and locations over the past decade, whereas the APT is always ready to reach out to lesser known territories. A good example this year would be the display of works and commissions from North Korea; which may seem a little out of place next to some of the other works, however leaves you with thoughts on a different tempo of contemporary practices. In addition, with the inclusion of other aspects of contemporary culture such as film (since APT5) and Pacific Reggae (new this year), the APT goes beyond the comfort zone of the single discipline of the visual arts and strides out to negotiate the contemporaneity in Asia and the Pacific.
