"The Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art will at last reopen in April 2019 following the completion of a total renovation of the museum facility. Exactly 100 years earlier, in 1919, some young Aichi artists in their teens and 20s were inspired by the Tokyo-based Western-painting group Sodosha to launch their own exhibition. Although the group, known as Aibisha, was strongly influenced by national trends, the artists were committed to pursuing their activities in the local area. In this exhibition, we draw on works from the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, the Nagoya City Art Museum, Toyota Municipal Museum of Art and other regional collections, to illustrate the various movements and events that shook up the Aichi art scene over the last century. These include the vigorous Western-painting and avant-garde movements of the 1920s and '30s, the chaos and revitalization of the '40s and '50s, the anti-art and performance trends of the '60s and '70s, the increase of galleries dealing with contemporary art in the '80s and '90s, and the flourishing of goverment-sponsored open-call exhibitions and festivals in the 2000s and '10s."
