Zhang Xiaogang (b.1958) is an artist who was one of the earliest students at the Sichuan Fine Art Institute after the Cultural Revolution. From 1985–1986, he, together with other young painter friends, organised a series of exhibitions and forums in Shanghai, Nanjing, Kunming, and Chongqing under the title ‘New Concrete Image’. These young artists from Southwest China (mainly the Sichuan and Yunnan provinces) formed one of the major groups of the 1985 New Wave. In 1989, Zhang’s work was exhibited in the ‘China/Avant-Garde Exhibition’ at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. During the 1990s, Zhang participated in major exhibitions both in and outside of China.
