Mausoleum (Exhibition view)

The work was first shown in the exhibition entitled 'Memorial: an installation with photographs and sculpture' (1993).

Excerpt from Kamala Kapoor, The Art Of Vivan Sundaram, Lustre Press, Roli Books, 2002:

'The many parts of the large installation, with spaces in between, were connected notionally by the single idea of the '92-'93 communal riots that took place in Mumbai in the aftermath of the demolition of the Babri Masjid. In its different aspects, the work simultaneously mourned and honoured the innocent victims of this carnage.'

Materials used in this artwork include steel, glass, neon light with white inlaid marble, and plaster cast of a live body.
