Amrita with Cousin Viola

This work is from the Re-take of Amrita series.

Excerpt from Vivan Sundaram , Vivan Sundaram: Re-take of Amrita, Tulika Books, New Delhi, 2001:

'Amrita, dressed in black, sits in the balcony of the Rue de Bassano flat in the early 1930s. The sanguine model (Reclining Nude, painted by Amrita in 1933 in Budapest) is her cousin Viola, sister of her husband Victor Egan. Amrita's dress and pose, the balcony rail, the window shutters and the black void remind me of famous paintings by Manet and Matisse.'
