Salon Natasha

A view of Salon Natasha on 30 Hang Bong street. The house was built in 1927. The same architect designed the houses at number 27, 24 and 30; the other two buildings had been demolished.

The family of Vu Dan Tan's father Vu Dinh Long (a famous playwright and established publisher) moved into the first floor of the building by the authorities in 1960 after their previous property, including Tan Dan publishing house, was confiscated by the government. Since then the family resides at 30 Hang Bong. The house itself was renovated by Vu Dan Tan but only the colour of the façade (walls and door) had changed. This thus brought about a contradicting traditional appearance of the Salon and the contemporary happening it houses.

This photograph, alongside the other photo documentations taken during 1990 to 1993, reflects the multi-functionality of the Salon; not only was it a home for Vu Dan Tan and Natasha Kraevskaia, but it also served simultaneously as Tan's studio, exhibition space, and a place for social gatherings.
