Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul won the Palme D'Or at Cannes for "Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives" in May 2010, a month that saw a violent military crackdown on anti-government protestors in Bangkok.  Perceived as anti-monarchist in Thailand and innovative by his loyal fanbase, he is a polarizing figure in Thailand and abroad.
