Catalogue of Whitney Museum of American Art's permanent collection over a period of fifteen years. Works by artists such as Cy Twombly, Alexander Kalder, Georgia O'Keefe, Richard Serra, Louise Bourgeois, Arschile Gorky, Eva Hesse, Lichtenstein, Warhol, Edward Hopper and Nam June Paik. Initiated by Tom Armstrong, Director of WMAA, the impetus behind the publication was to, "determine the true nature of the institution... The permanent collection of a museum is an extension of the intellectual and aesthetic concerns of the institution's leaders..." Armstrong's introduction traces the roots of the Whitney establishment from its founder Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (from 1930 until 1942) to the present day. Nine essays by Susan Larsen (Curator of the Permanent Collection) on different aspects of the American Modern Art scene, including Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Minimalism and Geometric Abstraction.
