The series of projects entitled 'What are they doing here?' seeks to encourage lively communication between Chinese artists and employees at Siemens in China. They are invited to perceive their working environment not solely in terms of its commercial aspects, but also in its emotional, social and creative dimensions.
Cao Fei was asked by OSRAM China Lighting Ltd., Foshan, and Siemens Arts Program to create an independent artwork in collaboration with the employees. She posed the question 'What are you doing here?', and distributed questionnaires to staff in different positions in order to compile their hopes, dreams, anxieties and expectations. These feelings were visualized through light installations, a studio performance and a video, which were presented at the OSRAM site from April 10 to 15, 2006.
The present catalogue includes a preface by Lars Johnsen, foreword by Christine Hildebrandt, an article by Hu Fang and artist biography.
