This is the catalogue for the exhibition of mainland Chinese artist, Guo Wei. The subjects in Guo’s paintings are naked or lightly dressed adolescence set in closed interiors where mosquitoes and moths spin around. The awkward poses of his figures, the monochromatic palette and the random smears of white paint on the canvas are not merely descriptions of daily life; they evoke a sensation. Pi Li points out in his essay, Guo ‘discovered a new realism in art and life, beyond the rural, nostalgic and nationalistic forms of art in China… (He) makes us aware of the constancy and mundanity in life, and simultaneously the possibility of transcending this life.’ A biography of the artist is included.
