The exhibition entitled 'Likeness and Unlikeness' is taken from Qi's painting theory that "The wonder of painting lies somewhere between likeness and unlikeness. Too much likeness would be fawning on the populace while too much unlikeness, deceiving the world." This was the very realm that spurred Qi on with experimentations all his life. The 80 or so works specially selected for the exhibition, primarily paintings with a supplement of calligraphies and seals, cover the artist's early and late styles illustrative of the different stages of his artistic development. The present catalogue includes foreword by Tang Hoichiu, preface by Yang Renkai, and chronology of the artist.
