'Montien Boonma (1953-2000) is Thailand's most highly regarded contemporary artist. Boonma studied in Thailand and in Europe and incorporated Western ideas into his Thai vocabulary of art, exploring many subjects, including environmental and other social issues. This book focuses on his work inspired from Buddhism. In the troubled and turbulent world of the late twentieth century, Boonma explored art as a place of refuge "to calm the mind". His contemplative and interactive installations are both inviting and challenging to the viewer. He uses shapes, forms, textures and aromatic herbs to evoke the process of meditation and healing, enveloping the viewer in an architecture of the senses, a "ritual space" where people "can rest their mind and thoughts". What he wrote about one of his installations summarizes the philosophy of life and art he tirelessly shared with his audience around the world.' - excerpt from book jacket
