New Era Ladies (NEL) is a collaborative creation by two sisters Satoko Miyakoshi and super-KIKI with a group of like-minded people. NEL started when one of the creators was being sexually harassed in a club. After tweeting her experience and causing a stir online, it led to the decision to express themselves and to raise the awareness towards the system of patriarchy through D.I.Y. a zine.
As referring to the introduction, NEL 'is neither a specialised study of Feminism nor the so-called cutting-edge feminist. The purpose of creating this zine is to share the message of 'feelings that belongs only to women' sent out by a group of people from different background, generation, and area of interest.'
The first issue of NEL started with a Girl Talk 'Ladies & Bra Talk' by 8 females about "machoism", "mansplaining" and sexual harassment they experienced in daily life or on the internet. The zine features interviews with two female artists Yuki Iiyama and Haruka Ihara, essay by artist Yui Usui who writes about her work Empty Names / 空(から)の名前 (2013). 'Crush the Ball' is a section where Satoko, Hanako and Misa share their own experience of sexual harassment. With a page of selected fashion, comic strip 'Zunko Meets Feminist', girls comic review and essays written by Akiko Masuda and TOMICA.
