This 4-volume publication is produced to accompany the group exhibition of the same title of four Chinese artists at Yuz Museum, Jakarta, from March to June 2010.

Curated by art historian Wu Hung, this exhibition looks into the fabric of the history of contemporary photography in China. Detailing the 30 years of development, Wu situates the four artist between the rubric of documentary photography and conceptual photography, as the two genres were popular since the 1990s. These four artists, according to Wu, do not fall into either one category but reinvent and re-imagine the documentary, realist nature of photography by bearing in mind the conceptual tendencies of the photographic medium.

Each book contains Wu's curatorial essay, features one separate artist, and includes respective biographies.
