This is the catalogue for the exhibition ‘Red Hot: A Special Exhibition of Contemporary Chinese Art’ held in Beijing in May 2001. The aim of the exhibition was to illustrate the strengths exhibited by a diversity of young artists whose concerns, as shown in the works presented here, run from personal to social. Some express with humour, some make use of bright consumer icons while others explore classical Chinese culture with contemporary interpretations. The accompanying essays, written by noted academics and art critics, offer an informative study of contemporary Chinese art in the 1990s. Also included here are texts on individual artists and their works.
