The Scissors series represents a new stage in the art of Mao Xuhui. Gone are the heavy colours and dense textures. They are replaced by softer colouring and finer techniques from which emerge a sense of calmness and detachment. The artist also declared that he no longer saw scissors as specific symbols of authority and power as he did in his experiments in 1993 and 1994. Instead, he focused on and took pleasure in re-creating the shape and form of scissors on canvas.
