This is an exhibition catalogue for the artist Wong Po-yeh (1901-1968) who was simultaneously a connoisseur and an advocate of art during his life time. Although Wong’s vision was always focused on the great tradition of literati painting, he had also made explorations which led him to establish his own distinctive style. Paintings done in the style of old masters such as Chen Hongshou and Hua Yan are included. The focus of the present catalogue, however, falls on paintings of Hong Kong natural landscapes Wong executed during the 1950s and 1960s. It is through these paintings that Wong created new formal elements and charged traditional subject matter with the sentiments of modern life. The accompanying essays offer a study of the life, art and contribution of Wong Po-yeh. Appendixes comprising writings of Wong Po-yeh and his seals included. A checklist of the exhibits, a glossary of names and a selected bibliography are also provided.
