A review of a two-part show entitled, "China Fast Forward:  Photography of Daily Life, 1917-2002," at China Institute and at International Center of Photography, as well as of Beijing-based photographer Hai Bo 's debut show at Max Protech gallery.  From 1917, the social scientist Sidney Gamble photographed China as it came into contact with western modernism.  Gu Zheng organzied the China Institute show "Documenting China:  Contemporary Photography and Social Change," for the Bates College Museum of Art .  Cotter finds  Hr. Hai's photographs a particularly engaging mixture of personal tragedy and cultural history.
