This material is one of the two volumes published in conjunction with the exhibition entitled 'YAYOI KUSAMA: NEW YORK/TOKYO.' This volume presents a comprehensive review of the artist's works during her New York period (1958-68), with a foreword by Yasuo Kamon. The first two essays review the artist's works and performances, and discuss about them in relation to the contemporary art movement such as Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Minimalism, and Nouvelle Tendence in Europe. Zelevansky concludes that the artist's works are truly original, and do not fall in any category. Hoptman discusses about a similarity between Kusama and European Nouvelle Tendence artists, in their experimentation with the strategies of monochrome and repetitive field structure. The essay by Tatehata examines the artist's surrealistic representational works from her early years in Japan, and argues about the spontaneity of their surrealistic quality, by pointing out the influence of the traditional Japanese painting, her mental state, and absence of the artist's direct encounter with Surrealism. The essay by Munroe tells us about the artist's literary works in relation to modern/contemporary Japanese literature and her life in New York. Each essay is followed by notes, which include bibliographical information. Catalogue section includes 84 colour plates, followed by a selected exhibition history.
