Taiwanese artist Yen Ding-sen was born in Tainan, an old city in southern Taiwan in 1960. He was educated as a painter at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts, and has been working with the same media in different ways since his graduation. Although he uses Western media such as oil, acrylic and mixed media, his works are deeply rooted in traditional Chinese paintings, or at least in the traditional culture, as shown in the titles such as Emerald Cabbage, Cordyceps Sinensis (a Chinese herb), or A Scroll of Landscape Painting. The author Champion Chen discusses his paintings in relation to the literati (wenren) culture in the catalogue essay. A brief biography of the artist is provided in both Chinese and English in the back.
