This publication is at large a retrospective book on Chinese artist Zhang Xiaogang. Tracing his artistic practices following a chronological order, this book addresses various issues ranging from his growing up during the Cultural Revolution, the idea of family which remains his focus of work to date, as well as the notion of memory, identity, and the nation state as apparent in his works.

Includes a personal chronology illustrated with private photographs drawn from the artist's archive, and a collection of letters and correspondences between the artist and his acquaintances.
