Context

‘Birth and Life of Modernity’ was an exhibition of ‘Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces' from the French state collections. Held between 6th February and 5th March 1989, the exhibition was part of Festival of France in India, under the patronage of Government of Republic of India and the Government of Republic of France.The Indian Commissioners for ‘Birth and Life of Modernity’ comprised of Anis Farooqi, Gulammohammed Sheikh and Geeta Kapur. It was organized under the aegis of Festival of France in India by the following French agencies: L’Association Francaise d’Action Artistique (AFAA); The Ministry of External Affairs; The Secretariat of State for International Cultural Relations, in collaboration with the Musee d’Orsay, Paris, and the Musee National d’Art Moderne, Pompidou Centre, Paris. From India, the participating organizations were The Festival of India, New Delhi, and National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.
