Manuscript on the basis of which artist K.G. Subramanyan delivered for the 'University Extension Lecture' at Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, in November 1970.

The text was subsequently published under the same title by the Department of Art History, Kala Bhavana, Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, in March 1972. The text was also featured as an essay in K.G. Subramanyan's Moving Focus: Essays on Indian Art, compiled by Gulammoahmmed Sheikh and published by Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, in 1978.
