This catalogue was published in conjunction with the 6th International Istanbul Biennial held from September to October 1999, featuring 56 artists from 32 countries. Working under the theme 'Tutku ve Dalga', or 'The Passion and The Wave', curator Paolo Colombo aimed 'to make legible the temperament of each work in the exhibition and to focus on the sensory qualities and the degree of emotional intensity that are the cornerstones of any personal output'. The title of the biennial was inspired by one of the great voices of Istanbul, Antonis Diamantidhis, who sang under the stage name of Dalga. It emphasised the singular viewpoint of each invited artist, offering 'poetic catharsis rather than pragmatic solutions to political and social problems'.
