Media-artist Paul Chan who is best known for his digital animations and political activism, visited the devastated Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans in 2006 and conceived of a theatrical project. With the support of Creative Time, a nonprofit organization supporting public art and the direction of Christopher McElroen, the Classical Theater of Harlem staged free, outdoor performances of "Waiting for Godot" by Samuel Beckett. The performances took place in the Lower Ninth Ward and Gentilly in November 2007, and were part of Paul Chan's larger art project in New Orleans.
