This catalogue accompanies a touring exhibition held at Tate Gallery Liverpool from October to December 1991, Whitechapel Art Gallery from December 1991 to February 1992 and Malmö Konsthall, Sweden from March to May 1992. The exhibition aims at offering the public in Britain and Sweden a representative sample of the innovative art scene of Japan at that time. The diversity of Japanese art styles — not just a crude division into 'traditional' new art and 'western' new art but subtle and obvious distinctions within each group — is presented.
