This is a book about the daily living of a group of artists (visual arts, theatre, music, film) living in the suburb of Beijing, for example, Yuan Ming Yuan. They were 'independent' in the sense that they were not attached to any institutions, and their works were considered experimental and alternative. Being personal acquaintance of these artists, the author tells us the real side of living as independent and experimental artists in China in the last decade of the 20th Century.
