Contemporary Chinese art has become an emerging star in the international art scene since the mid-1990s. A great number of Chinese artists had been invited to participate in biennials and triennials held in the West and the Asia-Pacific region. But what will be the next step, and in what directions contemporary Chinese art will go? The idea puts forward by the curators of this exhibition is that contemporary Chinese art should be created with a Chinese context, meaning that art should convey artists’ observations and documentations of the socio-economic transformations the country is undergoing. The next step is to study artistic development, exchange and competition in the international art scene so as to establish a niche for contemporary Chinese art. The accompanying essays offer an in-depth study of the history and evolution of contemporary Chinese art. Artist biographies are included. With a foreword by He Yuehua (Director of the Design Museum, Beijing).
