It is often assumed that formalist art is disconnected from politics; and that the evolution of this branch of modernism has been restricted to Russia, Europe and North America. This book traces the political and historical journey of geometric abstraction through the century and around the world. Taking Kazimir Malevich's black square as a starting point, paintings, sculptures and photographs map how geometric abstraction evolved in relation to social change, in locations ranging from revolutionary Russia to new wave Brazil, oil boom Dubai and postmodern New York. The exhibition showcases over a hundred of works, spanning painting, sculpture, film and photography, produced between 1915 and 2015 in locations including Beijing, Buenos, Aires, Cairo, Dubai, Mumbai, Palestine, Rio de Janeiro, Tehran and Tel Aviv.
Including plates of art works and artists' biographies.
