'The term "altermodern" has been coined by critical theorist and curator Nicolas Bourriaud to describe the art that has arrived at the end of the postmodern period, made in today's global context, as a reaction against cultural standardisation. Key aspects of this new modernity are explored in essays and contributions from prominent writers, art historians, artists and philosophers.'  (Back cover)

This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition 'Altermodern: Tate Triennial' which was held at Tate Britain from February to April 2009. A series of four one-day events, the Prologues, was held before the exhibition. Each Prologue comprised lectures, performances, films and discussions attempting to introduce and provoke debate around the Triennial's themes: 'Altermodern', 'Exiles', 'Travels' and 'Borders'.

The participating artists come from different parts of the world and only Asian artists are listed below.
