ART HK 08, Hong Kong's first international art fair was a success in that art sales were high and that it has the potential to become a major fair in the international art calendar.  Held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, about 100 galleries from 17 countries participated.  The director of the fair, Mangnus Renfrew, explained that the growing wealth and economies of Asia have resulted in "not just sales of Chinese and Asian art to Western buyers but blue chip Western art to Asian buyers."  Charles Merewether, head of the event's advisory group called the fair "the beginning of a new relationship" between the Hong Kong government, commercial and non-commercial interests.  The sentiment that Hong Kong lacks an appreciation of art and artists in general was brought up at a conference organized by Asia Art Archive entitled "Shifting Sites:  Cultural Desire and the Museum."  The distinguished members of this panel offered planning advice to the West Kowloon Arts District project.  In a related aside entitled "A Very New History", the author Zabielskis features Claire Hsu and the Asia Art Archive.
