‘Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art – Collector’s International Edition is the first magazine introducing Chinese contemporary art in English. This book comprises 51 interviews with 55 artists by the Yishu's Managing Editor, Zheng Shengtian since its first issue in May 2002. During the time, he travelled around China, Taiwan, other countries in Asia, Europe and North America, and talked to artists about their childhood, family, school life, interests, life's ups and downs, gains and losses as well as their aspirations.
Being a world-known scholar, curator and artist, Zheng is intentionally evasive to discuss topics seemingly unrelated to art. He wants readers to uncover the artists under their idol-like appearance, to look closer and find the street urchin or the familiar girl-next-door, who shares the same real side of human nature. Behind the shininess, the artists are naturally sensitive and fragile. Listening to their confessions is touching.’ – translated from back cover.
