Catalogue of Indonesian Muslim performance artist Arahmaiani's exhibition at the Jim Thompson House in Bangkok. The artist has been probing the complex issue of Muslim identity and symbols for several years. Collaborating with the James H.W. Thompson Foundation and girls from Baan Krua, she has made art that not only asks viewers to re-examine misconceptions and cliches that distort the reality of Islam, but also stresses the universal cultural values of the faith along with differences in its interpretation. Her approach is not an apology for Islam, but rather an exercise in re-contextualisation that effectively asks her audience to reconsider the validity of the borders drawn between us and them. The present catalogue provides documentation of the exhibition, artist biography and essays by regional experts who explore the issue of Muslim identity and its diverging ramifications.
