This is the catalogue for the group exhibition of 72 artists held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki, based on the theme of intercultural interaction. The catalogue includes substantial essays, both published and unpublished, written for each artist by a number of different writers. The section at the back of the catalogue includes the theatre programme for the event with accompanying essays for each performance. ARS 01 is the sixth exhibition in the ARS series, the first of which was held forty years ago. “The theme of ARS 01 is viewing contemporary art against the background of the ongoing multi-layered, multi-dimensional development towards internationalization. In the planning of the exhibition special attention has been paid to the possibilities for mutual understanding between cultures that are now opening up in many different ways, beyond the discussion of exoticism. One main feature of these processes is hybridism, which arises in encounters between cultures and alters traditional, culture bound visual languages.” – Maaretta Jaukkuri, co-curator.

Non-Asian artists include Doug Aitken, Carlos Arias, Matti Braun, Elina Brotherus, Jimmie Durham, Meschac Gaba, Kendell Geers, David Hammons, Siobhan Hapaska, Markus Holmstén, Laura Horelli, Henrik Håkansson, Anna Jermolaewa, Isaac Julien, Humberto Junca, Brian Jungen, Yishai Jusidman, Emma Kay, William Kentridge, Bodys Isek Kingelez, Jukka Korkeila, Guillermo Kuitca, Moshekwa Langa, Leonilson, Liza Lou, Tor-Magnus Lundeby, Cildo Meireles, Tracey Moffat, France Mondini-Ruiz, Delcy Morelos, Marko Mäetamm, Esko Männikkö, Ernesto Neto, Gabriel Orozco, Damián Ortega, Maria Clara Pinyero, Hans Hamid Rasmussen, Markus & Seppo Renvall, Pipilotti Rist, Pablo Rivera, Egill Sæbjörnsson, Doris Salcedo, Bojan Sarcevic, Sanna Sarva, Santiago Sierra, Kivi Sotamaa, Nancy Spero, Fred Tomaselli, Milica Tomic, Mette Tronvoll, Kara Walker, Vadim Zakharov, Darius Ziura.
