Part of a DVD series produced by China Institute featuring intimate discussions with artists, curators, critics and art historians about contemporary Chinese art.

Sun Xun studied printmaking at the China Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou but quickly found himself at the forefront of animation film in China. He combines his meticulous hand-drawn renderings ranging in subject matter from world history and politics to natural organisms with traditional materials such as old Communist newspapers and magazines. Sun Xun’s drawings and films have been shown in international film festivals, in Chinese museums and in organizations across the U.S., including The Drawing Center, CalArts and the Smithsonian Freer and Sackler Galleries.

This is a video recording of Sun Xun in conversation with Bérénice Reynaud, co-curator of the film and video series at the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT) in Los Angeles, on 12 November 2009. Two of Sun Xun's short films were screened on the occasion: Lie of Magician (2005) and The New China (2008). DVD contains an English and Mandarin version of the talk (1:05:35 mins), and an English version (50:30 mins). Artist bio also included.
