This catalogue is published to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the founding of Hong-Gah Museum. Founder Andrew Chew began collecting art in 1987 and established the Taiwan Gallery in 1992 to introduce and support promising young Taiwanese contemporary artists. A considerable number of works amassed during this period found their way into the collection of Hong-Gah Museum after the gallery ceased operations. The museum's collection now comprises more than 800 modern and contemporary works. While art from Taiwan remains its primary focus, Overseas Chinese, mainland Chinese artists and a few Western artists are also represented in the collection. A small number of works trace back to the early 20th century, while the vast majority were produced after the 1950s with contemporary works dating from the 1980s onwards the most numerous.

The works of 50 artists have been selected to not only provide readers with a quick peek at the cream of the museum's collection, but also to provide another perspective on the development of Taiwanese art since the advent of the 20th century. Illustrations in this catalogue are accompanied by brief artist biographies and notes (in Chinese only). List of works included.

Note: Only Asian artists are listed below.
