This monograph provides a visual documentation of a project born out of Bhalla's KHOJ² international residency in 2007, where he walked a total distance of 56 km along the banks of the Yamuna River. The urban leg of his journey, which flowed through Delhi, was 22 km.
'Atul Bhalla uses photography, performance, video, sculpture, and installation to immerse himself in the physical, historical, spiritual, and political significance of water. In Yamuna Walk, he documents a five-day trek along the riverside, aiming to trace the relationship between the sacred Yamuna River and his home of New Delhi, India.
Questioning the distribution, regulation, commodification, and pollution of water, Bhalla reflects on the encroaching changes of urban life as it interacts on a daily basis with the natural flow of the river. Bhalla describes his practice as an attempt to understand water, the way he "perceives it, feels it, drinks it, swims in it and sinks in it." His personal negotiation of water provides a stage from which to address larger political issues concerning bodies of water and the urban environment.' - excerpt from book flap
