The exhibition 'Avant-garde in Japan: Art into Life 1900-1940' was held from November 1999 to January 2000 at the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto. While Japanese avant-garde has been usually discussed in relation to the absorption of European avant-garde movements, this exhibition is not bound by this common notion. Rather, it tries to validate its autonomous development by tracing back to the art movements of the Meiji period which has nurtured awareness for the avant-garde in Japan. The exhibition also presents interchanges between Europe and Japan such as Japanese traditional elements in Bauhaus and the influence of Bauhaus on Yōga. The present publication accompanies the exhibition.

Other artists in the exhibition: Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Eugene Samuel Grasset, Henri Thiriet, Alfons Maria Mucha, Pierre Bonnard, Koloman Moser, Albert Boue, Wassily Kandinsky, David Davidovich Burljuk, Viktor Nikanorovich Palimov, Johannes Itten, Wener Graeff, Rudolf Lutz, Friedl Dicker, Erich Brendel, Werner Burrim, Marguerite Friedlaender-Wildenhain, Theodor Bogler, Otto Lindig, Margarete Heymann-Marks, Kurt Kranz, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Werner David Feist, Lucia Moholy, Paul Citroen, Walter Peterhans, Lotte Stam-Beese, Herbert Bayer, Adolf Meyer, Alma Siedhoff-Buscher, Lyonel Feininger, Senta Baumeister, Bilda Heynold-von Graefe, Eva Neuner-Kayser.
