Published in conjunction to the travelling exhibition 'AWAS! RECENT ART from INDONESIA', this catalogue offers a glimpse of the development of contemporary art in Indonesia, through the work of 14 artists and contributions from art critics, curators and art historians. By providing a background to such a development, namely the profound changes taking place and the profusion of languages, ethnicities and religious beliefs in Indonesia, the essays allow us to appreciate the work more thoroughly. Summary of these essays are also provided in Japanese, Indonesian and German. Artist biographies are included. With forewords by Mr. I.G.N. Anom (Director General of Culture, Indonesia), Raihul Fadjri (Chairperson at Cemeti Art Foundation), and preface from Nele Wasmuth (President of the Walter Spies Society, Germany).
