This catalogue was published in conjunction with the inaugural Brussels Biennial for contemporary art from October 2008 to January 2009, conceptualized by the founding Artistic Director Barbara Vanderlinden. It is the result of a collaboration that crosses traditional boundaries between biennials, exhibitions, institutions, curators and artists. It aims to radically move away from the process in which artworks are produced, presented, disseminated and contextualized. In view of the crucial role of old and emerging institutions, this biennial strives to present contemporary art in an exhibition developed and curated by a network of visual art organizations. The participating institutions have contributed seven chapters to this book with varied editorial approaches.

Includes artists' and contributors' biographies, as well as information on the participating institutions: Apartment 22, Experimental Space for Contemporary Art, Rabat, Morocco; BAK, Basis for Contemporary Art, Utrecht, the Netherlands; B.P.S.22, Space for Contemporary Creation of the Visual Arts Sector of Hainaut Province, Charleroi, Belgium; Drik, Picture Library, Dhaka, Bangladesh; Extra City, Center for Contemporary Art, Antwerp, Belgium; Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp, Belgium; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, the Netherlands; and Witte de With, Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Note: Only participating artists of Asian descent or those residing in Asia are listed below.
