The Busan Biennale 2006, that took place from Sept. 16 to Nov. 25 under the theme of ‘Everywhere’, was comprised of the Contemporary Art Exhibition and the Sea Art Festival.  (See other Busan Biennale 2006 publications: Homage to the Earth and A Tale of Two Cities).
The Sea Art Festival, directed by Byoung-Hak Ryu, a Germany-based independent curator, proposes the intervention of art in our living space under the theme of ‘Art in Life’. The festival comprises three exhibitions: Public Furniture and Living Furniture, both of which are held on streets near Haeundae Beach, Busan, while the third exhibition, the 'Sand Art' exhibition, is held on Haeundae Beach.  The Sea Art Festival presents 120 works from 16 countries. Public Furniture attempts an artistic transformation of public areas. Through artistic intervention in existing Street Furniture such as observatory towers, benches, crosswalks, trashcans, etc., the Festival seeks to transform Haeundae Beach, a special tourism zone of Korea, into an artistic space throbbing with contemporary art. An indoor exhibition, Living Furniture, provides a unique chance to experience artistically inspired household furniture. In Living Furniture, which consists of artworks created by 60 artists from Korea, China and Japan, our living spaces such as the bedroom, living room, kitchen, and bathroom, gets transformed into art pieces. The exhibition venue is the Busan Biennale 2006 Pavilion, constructed under the sponsorship of SK E & C CO., LTD.  Images of works in the present catalogue are from Public Furniture (182 pages) and Living Furniture (254 pages), and are accompanied by artists' exhibition histories.  Taecksang Kim's and Mikyung Lee's projects were never realized.  Among the participating western artists were:  Anja Vormann, Gunnar Friel, Oliver Kruse, Piotr Zamojski, Henk Visch, Heimo Zoebernig, Guillaume Bijl, Alina & Jeff Bliumis, Joaquin Gasgonia Palencia, and Klaus Pobitzer.
