'By Day, By Night, or Some (Special) Things a Museum Can Do' is the first group exhibition organized by the Rockbund Art Museum since its inauguration. From its earlier days as the RAS building and the Shanghai Museum, to its opening as a public library, and now re-emerging as a contemporary art museum, this establishment indicates a revival or a renaissance of a historically important institution, and marks Shanghai's latest attempt to put itself on the global art map. Nine artists from both China and abroad were invited to Shanghai to study, research and explore the histories and realities of both the city and of the Rockbund Art Museum and to produce site-specific projects for the exhibition. The exhibition, open to the public from daytime to nighttime, consists of two distinct but intertwined components in order to create an intimate and efficient relationship amongst the artists, the works, the event, the institution and the everyday reality of city life. During the daytime, a more materialized aspect of artistic and intellectual productions are on view. In the nighttime, the public is invited to experience and to enjoy things they cannot normally find in either their daytime life or ordinary night entertainment. The evening programme was developed in collaboration with art institutions and media from the local community and encompasses a series of lectures, panels, performance, workshops and film screening of works recommended by the participating artists.
This fully illustrated catalogue includes a curatorial statement by Hou Hanru and artist statements, as well as contributions by Kang Tae-Hee, Homi Bhabha and Margo Renisio. With artist and curator biographies.
