This catalogue is published on the occasion of the group exhibition 'Carnival', organised by Amnesty International Hong Kong at KONG Art Space in 2017, to raise awareness of the public towards the violations of freedom of expression both in Hong Kong and around the globe.
'The exhibition features 21 Hong Kong-based established artists. They all have generously produced a new work on the theme of Carnival, using every kind of mediums from photography to painting through engraving and installation. Their interpretation of the theme is also very diverse. Some have chosen to play with the absurd side of Carnival to produce satirical works, while other are using more metaphorical or poetic approaches. All of them defend freedom of expression, either by praising its power, highlighting its vulnerability or expressing their fear about its reduction.' - excerpted from curatorial statement
Includes an introduction of Amnesty International Hong Kong, forward by the director Mabel Au, curatorial statement by Caroline Ha Thuc, and a collection of works by over fifty artists, with twenty created exclusively for the exhibition, and others donated by the artists for the fundraising auction. Short introduction of artists and concept notes are accompanied by colour plates of works.
