Catalogue of joint exhibition held at the Goethe-Institut Hanoi and the University of Fine Arts Hanoi in 2005. Cay (meaning 'Tree' in Vietnamese) is an international art project which brought together artists, scientists and historians, to discuss ecological dimensions of the theme, as well as the comparative cultural aspects of the tree as allegory in mythology, literature and iconography of Europe and Asia. Twenty Vietnamese artists, students of the University of Fine Arts Hanoi and the University of Forestry Vietnam, as well as ten artists form four European countries, Canada and the USA participated in the exhibition. The present catalogue gives an impression of the diverse treatments of the theme through photography, video, painting and installation. The works were displayed over a period of weeks in several solo exhibitions at the Goethe-Institut and finally in a large concluding exhibition at the University of Fine Arts Hanoi. Also provided in the catalogue are texts by Franz Xavier Augustin (Goethe-Institut Hanoi), Le Anh Van (University of Fine Arts Hanoi), Veronika Radulovic (curator of the exhibition), and Prof. Alexander Demandt (Free University Berlin) who gave a lecture entitled 'The Tree in East Asian Cultural History' at the Goethe-Institut in May 2005.
