This is the catalogue for the First Chengdu Biennale, held in 2001 and showcased works by over a hundred and forty artists. Unlike many biennials and triennials, all of the participants were Mainland Chinese artists or artists from the Chinese diaspora. This made possible an in-depth study of the development of 'Jiashang Art' in the history of contemporary art in China since the 1980s.
According to the chief curator of this Biennale, Liu Xiaochun, many art critics have categorised painting, sculpture, photography as 'Jiashang Art' whereas conceptual art, installation art and performance art as 'Jiaxia Art'. In curating this exhibition, he attempted to show that the above was a misleading and insufficient categorisation. Since many of the experimental art forms such as installation art and conceptual art may have painting or sculpture as their components, while traditional art forms such as a painting or a photo can be a piece of conceptual art. Thus, a clear boundary between 'Jiashang Art' and 'Jiaxia Art', in fact, did not exist. Through this exhibition, Liu attempted to open up further discussion on this issue.

Artist biographies are included.
