Chow Chun-Fai is known for his paintings based on iconic films shot during the heyday of Hong Kong cinema between the 1960s and 1990s. In his most recent work, he has turned to the depiction of scenes from films set in ancient China, a genre known as guzhuang (which literally means 'ancient costume') or period dramas. For this series Chow selected films that are either remakes of other films or adaptations of stage plays or literary texts, reflecting his ongoing interest in the mechanics of reproduction and repetition. This catalogue features recent works from 2007 to 2010, divided into sections titled 'Reproduction of Reproduction', 'Local and Global', and 'Media versus Media'. A film reference section is included. With artist biography.
