This booklet is a guide to the exhibition 'Classic Contemporary', held at Singapore Art Museum from 29 January to 2 May 2010. Shining the spotlight on iconic works from SAM's collection, the exhibition playfully asks what makes a work of art 'classic' or 'contemporary' — or 'classic contemporary'. Beneath the glamour, the stellar cast of painting, sculpture, video, photography and performance art from across Southeast Asia also pose challenging questions about society, nation and the history of art itself. While SAM has been collecting works by practising artists from the region since its inception in 1996, 'Classic Contemporary' marks the start of the museum's new contemporary art programming centred on enabling artistic development and growing audiences.

Exhibition plan and descriptions of work included.
