A one-day forum was held at Sherman Galleries, Sydney on 10 August 2006 to discuss how independent and non-commercial private foundations might contribute in helping to sustain valuable contemporary art and to increase enlightened understanding of it, taking into account the changes in its production and circulation in both regional and international contexts. The authors of the papers gathered in this volume respond from scholarly, art critical, curatorial and philanthropic points of view, assess the work of foundations around the world and outline the climate for philanthropy in Australia.

Includes the following appendices: 1. Cultural Gifts Program; 2. Register of Cultural Organisations; 3. Contemporary Visual Arts and Crafts Inquiry 2002; 4. Some Foundations for Contemporary Art: Descriptions and Details. With contributors' biographies.
